Wood Turtle (Glyptemys insculpta) is one of two species in the genus Glyptemys, both of which are limited to North America. Until 2002, the Wood Turtle was placed in the genus Clemmys but genetic analyses revealed that the Wood Turtle and Bog Turtle formed a distinct group. The Wood Turtle reaches carapace lengths of 6 to 9 inches. The wood turtle is accurately named, and spends most of its time in wooded areas. It is, however, also semi-aquatic and dependent on streams, rivers, and ponds.

늪거북과(―科 Emydidae)에 속하는 꼬리가 긴 거북.
캐나다 남동부의 노바스코샤에서부터 미국 동부와 중부지역에 걸쳐 분포한다. 조각등숲거북의 거칠은 등껍질은 길이가 15~20㎝이고, 넓은 각각의 갑판 위에는 동심축으로 홈이 팬 피라미드형의 돌기가 있다. 등껍질의 색상은 갈색이며 목과 다리는 붉은색이다. 조각등숲거북은 육지생활도 겸한다. 이 종류는 수영도 하지만 종종 목초지나 숲에서 작은 무척추동물이나 부드러운 식물들을 먹기 위해 돌아다니기도 한다. 이 종은 애완동물로도 사육되는데, 과거에는 식용으로 판매되기도 했다. ...
