The Oriental stork (Ciconia boyciana) is a large, white bird with black wing feathers in the stork family Ciconiidae. It is closely related to and resembles the European white stork (Ciconia ciconia), of which it was formerly often treated as a subspecies. Unlike its more widespread cousin, the Oriental stork has red skin around its eye, with a whitish iris and black bill. The Oriental storks are found in Japan, Manchuria, Korea and Siberia.

◈ 원앙새도 울고 갈 황새이야기
금슬좋은 새로 흔히 원앙새라고 하는데 최근 연구에 따르면 황새도 그에 못지 않다고 한다. 황새 전문가 정석환 교수에 따르면, '황새는 한번 짝짓기를 하면 배우자가 죽기 전까진 바람을 절대 피우지 않고 월동을 위해 수천키로미터를 날아갈 때도 항상 같이 다닌다'고 한다. 특이한 점은 암놈이 발언권이 더 세다는 점인데, 둥지를 만들기 위해 숫놈이 재료를 물어오는데 암놈이 마음에 들지 않으면 곧바로 버리고 숫놈은 두말없이 다른 재료를 물어 온다고 한다. 이 외에 정석환 교수가 밝혀낸 황새의 특성은 새끼 때 경험이 없는 것은 절대 먹지 않고, 생후 4개월이 지나면 부모와 떨어져 30여년간 독립생활을 한다는 점 등이다.
