Plain-crowned spinetail

Photo of a plain-crowned spinetail made by N. Takano (
personal
museum of natural history
, his copyright as with all the
other photographers) on Fungu island in the Ralleigh Falls nature
reserve, a part of the extended CSNR reserve in Suriname, August
2004. The bird is common in the undergrowth of wet places, often
in wasteland. The nest is a big ball of fine sticks with a narrow
entrance. But not narrow enough to prevent a brood parasite as
big as the
striped cuckoo
to lay her
egg in the nest. The young of the spinetail then has no chance.
This spinetail has an easily recognised

striped cuckoo
