Abstract: In the early part of the century, roseate spoonbill numbers were declining dramatically due to plume hunters who sought their beautiful plumage for fashion. But with the passing of the Lacey Act and other protective laws, the roseate spoonbill numbers increased and healthy populations thrive today. Preferring mangrove and saltwater lagoons along the Gulf of Mexico from Texas to Florida, the roseate spoonbill feeds on shrimp, small fish and aquatic insects.

◈ 식물중에도 새끼를 낳는 것이 있다 ?
많은 육지식물들이 자손의 번식을 위해 씨앗이나 포자를 만들어 낸다. 그런데 식물이 씨앗을 맺어 곧바로 땅에 떨어져 번식을 하지 않고 어미나무에서 어느 정도 자란 다음 뛰어내려 독립해서 살아간다면 새끼를 낳는 식물이라고 할 수 있을까? 맹그로브(mangrove=홍수림)는 열대와 아열대의 갯벌이나 하구에서 자라는 늘 푸른 나무의 한 무리로서 미국과 아프리카의 동 서해안, 마다가스카르, 인도, 말레이시아, 호주, 그리고 태평양 제도에 숲을 이루고 있다. 염분이 있는 곳에서 살지 못하는 육지식물과 달리 맹그로브 숲의 나무는 바닷물에 정기적으로 잠기는 연안에 살면서 세포 안에 염분을 받아들이며 살아가는 방법을 터득했는데, 이 식물 중 일부는 씨앗이 물위에 떨어지면 뿌리를 내리기 전에 쓸려갈 것을 염려하여 나무에 달린 채로 씨앗에서 싹과 뿌리가 나서 약 10㎝ 정도 자란 다음 뛰어내려 진흙 속에 뿌리를 박고 독립한다. 만약 잘못 떨어져 바닷물에 떠내려가더라도 파도에 실려 해변의 어딘가에 뿌리를 내린다. 이러한 식물을 태생(胎生)식물 즉, 새끼를 낳는 식물이라고 한다. |
