Narragansett Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve White-tailed deer - Odocoileus virginianus. This common deer has its highest population density in Rhode Island on Prudence Island. The island supports a herd of approximately 300 individuals.

The white-tailed deer or whitetail deer (Odocoileus virginianus) is a medium-sized deer native to the United States, Canada, Mexico, Central America, and South America as far south as Peru and Bolivia. Odocoileus virginianus can be recognized by the characteristic white underside to its tail.
