대형 두개골의 전체 길이는 17mm 이상이고 앞니를 포함하면 18mm가 넘는다. 몸은 일본산 Saigoku 땃쥐와 유사하다. 몸의 밑면은 옅은 다갈색이다. 꼬리에는 털이 많다.

제주도에만 서식하는 한국고유종으로, 혼효림 주변의 경작지에 서식하며 무척추동물 및 개미 등을 섭식한다.
