[National Geographic] Greenland Shark (小頭睡???(大西洋睡???), 그린랜드상어)

Nick Caloyianis

“Slow and spooky, an 11-foot [3.4-meter] shark cruises past a submerged ice ledge where seals often rest. Never before photographed beneath Arctic ice, the Greenland shark, whose scientific name, Somniosus microcephalus, means ‘small-headed sleeper,’ has eluded close study until now.”

The Greenland shark, Somniosus microcephalus, also known as the sleeper shark, gurry shark, ground shark, grey shark, or by the Inuit languages name Eqalussuaq, is a large shark native to the waters of the North Atlantic Ocean around Greenland and Iceland. These sharks live farther north than any other shark species. They are closely related to the Pacific sleeper shark. This is one of the largest species of shark, of dimensions comparable to those of the great white shark.
Scientific Name: Somniosus microcephalus (Bloch & Schneider, 1801)
Common Names:
English – Greenland Shark, Sleeper Shark, Large Sleeper Shark, Sleeper, Gurry Shark
French – Laimargue Du Groenland
Spanish – Tiburón Boreal, Tollo De Groenlandia
Synonyms: Squalus microcephalus Bloch & Schneider, 1801
Taxonomic Notes: Yano et al. (2004) confirm that sleeper sharks found in the South Atlantic and Southern Ocean are a separate species, Somniosus antarcticus Whitley, 1939.
