캘NP::Herbivores

Ķemeru NP is an area where visitors have good chances to watch wild ungulates such as moose, red and roe deer in their natural habitat, as hunting here is limited in time and space; therefore, the animals are less shy. The best locations to see them is in the meadows at the western edge of the park and Dunduru meadows, usually when animals come out to feed at dawn and dusk, though it is worth keeping your eyes peeled anywhere in the wild when you are out and about.
If you don't see any wild animal do not be disappointed as we have provided a surprise for you. Auroch-like Heck cattle were released in the Dunduru meadows as a part of the LIFE-Nature project (supported by WWF and European Large Herbivore Fund). These are typical herbivores that need extensive grazing areas with long vegetation, as this cattle does not eat grass to the ground. Such grazing style increases species diversity in the meadows, and the grass that is not consumed in summer will provide food in winter together with shrubs. Originally, large herbivores (auroch, bison, tarpan) sustained natural meadows and mosaic landscape. Release of free-ranging cattle is an attempt to model a situation as it was 500 years ago in order to enrich biologically depleted agricultural land.
Be quiet and watchful and who knows, maybe you will even manage to see some carnivore?
