길이 몸길이 53~66cm
쇠기러기와 비슷하나 훨씬 작다. 암수의 이마·정수리·뒷머리는 암갈색이다. 이마의 백색 부분은 정수리에 이른다. 부리는 선명한 핑크색, 장미색, 적등색 등이다. 황색의 눈둘레는 특징적이다. 한국에서는 경기와 평북에서 2회의 채집 기록이 있을 뿐, 미조로 도래한다. 농경지, 소택지, 초습지, 호소, 간척지, 해만 등지에 산다. 툰드라 북부 산림대, 특히 툰드라와 아북극(亞北極)의 왜소한 수목한계선의 추이대(推移帶) 사이의 툰드라에서 번식한다. 그러나 툰드라에서뿐 아니라 때로는 산간 하천의 하류 산록, 산간 호수, 고산 벼랑에서도 번식하며 때로는 고산 늪이나 물가의 돌밭에서도 번식한다. 한배의 산란수는 3∼8개이며 약 25일간 포란한다. 수컷이 포란하며 육추기간은 5주간이다. 푸른 풀잎, 연한 북극버들등 다양한 식물성 먹이를 먹는다.

Lesser White-fronted Goose (Anser erythropus) is a goose closely related to the larger White-fronted Goose (A. albifrons).
It breeds in northernmost Asia, but it is a scarce breeder in Europe. There is a re-introduction scheme in Fennoscandia.
The Lesser White-fronted Goose winters further south in Europe and is a very rare winter visitor to Great Britain. The only regular site they visit is WWT Slimbridge in Gloucestershire, England, where they inspired Sir Peter Scott to set up The Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust. |
