곰 Ursus thibetanus ussuricus (Manchurian black bear)
곰과에 딸린 짐승. 산림에 사는데 털 빛은 새까맣고 몸길이는 1.2~1.5m쯤이다. 다리는 굵고 튼튼하며 나무타기와 헤엄을 잘하고 무엇이든 잘 먹는다. 겨울에는 굴속에서 겨울잠을 자고 2월 경에 1~2마리의 새끼를 낳는다. 주로 밤에 나다니며 나무뿌리, 어린 싹, 개미, 물고기 따위를 먹는다. 쓸개는 웅담이라고 하여 귀한 약재로 쓰이고 털가죽은 방석용으로 쓰인다. 우리나라, 일본, 만주, 타이완, 인도차이나, 타이, 미얀마, 네팔, 아프가니스탄 등지에 분포한다.
