Turkey vulture (Cathartes aura)

Widespread throughout the Americas, turkey vultures often venture into the hot deserts, where tall cacti provide convenient perches. In contrast to other vultures, they often fly low over the ground. Experiments suggest that they have a well-developed sense of smell, and by keeping low, they have more chance of detecting the scent of rotting flesh.
