Wood Duck drake (Aix sponsa)

Captured from a WONDERFUL MULTIMEDIA CD-ROM title,
"Eyewitness Encyclopedia of Nature",
Dorling Kindersley Multimedia, 1995

Wood Duck
Male has brightly colored plumage.
AT THE BEGINNING of the 20th century, the wood duck faced extinction. Fortunately, it is now protected, and more than a million birds are thought to live in the United States. Unlike most ducks, the wood duck nests in trees, and it often uses tree holes more than 30 feet (9m) off the ground.
