The common starling or European starling or starling (Sturnus vulgaris) is a medium-sized passerine bird in the starling family, Sturnidae. The common starlings breed in open habitats across its native range in temperate Europe and western Asia. The common starling was first described by Linnaeus in his Systema Naturae in 1758 under its current binomial name. Sturnus and vulgaris are derived from the Latin for "starling" and "common" respectively.
