천연기념물 325호이며 환경부에서 보호야생 동식물로 지정하고 있다.
호소, 논, 초습지, 소택지, 간척지 등지에서 생활한다. 아침과 저녁에 논과 간척지에서 무리를 지어 먹이를 찾는다. 하천의 섬 등지에서 번식하며 땅 위의 움푹 파인 곳에 마른 풀 줄기를 깔아 둥지를 만든다.
알은 크림빛이 도는 흰색으로 4-6개 낳는다.
벼, 보리, 밀 등 농작물과 수초, 패류등을 먹는다.
대형의 기러기로서 머리와 목 부분은 앞쪽과 뒤쪽의 색깔 차이가 뚜렷하여 다른 기러기류보다 밝게 보인다. 부리는 검은색으로 길며, 기부에는 흰 띠가 있다.
어린새는 부리기부의 흰띠가 없다. 2000년 국제자연보호연맹(IUCN) 적색목록에 멸종위기종(EN)으로 분류되어 있다.
