The Ophrys orchid is the master of imitation. Male bees often
take the Ophrys orchid for a female bee. The orchid deceives male
bees by releasing a chemical substance known as pheromone
usually excreted by female bees during the mating season.
The male bee, fooled by the scent, tries to mate with orchid
mistaken for a female bee.
In the meanwhile, the orchid places its pollen on the bee's
head. But the bee, still unware that it is being fooled,
continues to confess its love to the orchid.
