Cape griffon, Kolbe's vulture (Gyps coprotheres)


Cape Vulture (Gyps coprotheres) at the Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve, Cradle of Humankind, Gauteng, South Africa Due to the vulnerable status of the species, some of the vultures are tagged with a yellow plastic identification disc. An example of one can be seen on the bird on the left.

The Cape griffon or Cape vulture (Gyps coprotheres), also known as Kolbe's vulture, is an Old World vulture in the family Accipitridae. It is endemic to southern Africa, and is found mainly in South Africa, Lesotho, Botswana and in some parts of northern Namibia. It nests on cliffs and lays one egg per year.
