We have several dolphins who have learnt that the fishermen here are a soft
touch for a free feed. They follow the boats in to the marina, sometimes
even standing on their tails out of the water trying to see in the boats.
They follow them in right up onto the boatramp where they are barely under
water and turn from side to side peering out of one eye or the other to see
if anyone is going to give them a fish. They ride the bow waves of the
boats and will check you out if you are in a canoe. Of course the
authorities have jumped in and want to stop anyone from having any
interaction with them, or else a hefty fine applies, but surprise surprise,
suddenly are planning to set up an ecotourism venture, strictly regulated so
only a certain charter boat can take people out to see them etc... It will
be a real shame, as at the moment many people can see them as they come in,
and I would like to know how they are going to stop the dolphins doing what
they want to do, and make them appear only at the times and places they want
them to. |
