The small tortoiseshell is one of many butterflies that readily visit urban gardens if suitable food plants are present. Adults feed on nectar from the flowers of plants such as Buddleia and Michaelmas daisies, while their caterpillars feed greedily on nettle leaves. More and more gardeners are growing plants that are attractive to wildlife, creating their own tiny nature reserves within our cities. |
