The upcurved bill of the pied avocet is an adaptation for feeding in shallow water or liquid mud: the bird sweeps it from side to side through the surface layers to gather small shrimps, worms, insect larvae and fishes. Pied avocets prefer to breed in areas where there are extensive shallow lagoons, but in northern Europe, the drainage of wetlands has greatly reduced their numbers. |
