Camouflage J02 - Ocelot under shadow on branch - Neofelis nebulosa - mainland clouded leopard

나뭇가지 사이로 햇살이 밝게 비치는 날, 운표의 얼룩 무늬가
모습을 숨겨 주고 있다.

Scanned from a magazine for children "Kachi"(Mar. 1994),
which means black-billed magpie in Korean.

Enjoy it.

I'm almost certain that the image in question is of
a clouded leopard (Neofelis nebulosa) and not of an ocelot.
I consider myself fairly knowledgeable about Felis pardalis
(see my email address :)) and that certainly is not it; far
too husky (probably about 60-100 lbs instead of 20-40),
and the pattern (very large, fading rings instead of
small, more even ones) is not
nearly small enough; the thick bands on the neck also give away
the fact that it may be a clouded leopard, which is from India
and not South America. Thought you might want to know.

I entirely agree with previous coment about the misidentification
of this picture. I'm sure is a Neofelis nebulosa.

Neofelis nebulosa - clouded leopard, mainland clouded leopard
The clouded leopard (Neofelis nebulosa) is a medium-sized wild cat inhabiting dense forests from the foothills of the Himalayas through Northeast India and Bhutan to mainland Southeast Asia into South China. The clouded leopard has large dusky-grey blotches and irregular spots and stripes reminiscent of clouds. It uses its long tail for balancing when moving in trees and is able to climb down vertical tree trunks head first.
Order: Carnivora > Suborder: Feliformia > Family: Felidae > Subfamily: Pantherinae > Genus: Neofelis > Species: Neofelis nebulosa

Clouded Leopard (Neofelis nebulosa) is a medium-sized cat, 55 to 110 cm (2 ft to 3 ft 6 in) long and weighing between 15 and 23 kg (33 to 50 lb). It has a tan or tawny coat, and is distinctively marked with large, irregularly-shaped, dark-edged ellipses which are said to be shaped like clouds, hence both its common and original scientific name. It is found in southern China, the eastern Himalayas, north-east India and south-east Asia. The Bornean Clouded Leopard, Neofelis diardi, is a separate species found on the Sumatra, Borneo and the Batu Islands. Because of their distinct skull structure, the two species are considered sufficiently different to be the only members of their genus.
