Wood Turtle THIS FRESHWATER turtle lives as far north as the Great Lakes of the United States and Canada, where it survives the long winter by hibernating. The wood turtle spends much of its life out of the water in damp places. It uses its sharp claws to scrape away leaves and plants to find food.
