Photos of a female (above) and two males black-crested
antshrike, made by Foek Chin Joe in the north of Paramaribo,
Charlesburg and Tourtonne, in June 2005. Then a picture by K.
Dijkstra of a male seen from below and with a lot of black, made
at Weg naar Zee in February 2007 and one by Louis des Tombe also
in 2007. These antshrikes are common in bushes and gardens around
Paramaribo and are also found farther inland in the forest. They
are fast moving, searching for insects and small fruits. They
build a nest of grasses in a fork of a low bush and can have eggs
all year around (I have not found an report of a nest in
October). Pairs sometimes sing a duet, maybe also on this
