The giant panda lives in the mountains of China, in a small area of cool, moist bamboo forest between altitudes of 2,500m and 3,500m. It feeds almost exclusively on bamboo, although it has been known to catch and eat small animals. Giant pandas have evolved thumb-like digits for gripping the slender shoots of bamboo plants. |
