SHIH-TZU
The name Shih-Tzu, pronounced "sheed-zoo", means "lion". One theory holds
that they were brought to China from Tibet as gifts for the Emperor. The
care and breeding of Shih-Tzu was the responsibility of the court eunuchs
who competed with each other to breed the best dogs. The Emperor selected
the best specimens and had their portraits painted or embroidered in
tapestries. The first Shih-Tzu reached the western world in 1930 when an
English woman living in China managed to ship a few dogs home. Several other
were brought home by an English officer about the same time. These dogs
became the foundation stock for the breed. The Shih-Tzu is one of the most
popular of the toy breeds. All colors are permissible. The long luxurious
coat does require a lot of grooming but is well worth the effort.
