The range of the siamang in Malaysia and Sumatra is continually being cut back as the rainforests are cleared for agriculture and, especially, to provide timber for the logging industry. In the mid-1970s, the animal’s total population was estimated at less than 200,000, and scientists predicted that within a few decades only isolated populations would be left, assuming that pressures from land clearance continue. |
