Barrel jellyfish (Rhizostoma pulmo)

The barrel jellyfish, known as Rhizostoma pulmo, is a giant jellyfish with a large yellow bell and eight frilly tentacles. The barrel jellyfish is commonly found off of the southern and western coasts of Britain during the summer when it washes up on the shore during its quest to feed on plankton and avoid being hunted by the leatherback turtle, its greatest predator. The barrel jellyfish can sting, although not with an intensity enough to harm a human beyond a painful experience, so it is best to be avoided if seen on shore, especially as the tentacles can still sting after they are separated from the bell.
