In Lapland, reindeer have been semi-domesticated since about the 5th century, providing the Lapps with much of their material needs. In summer, the reindeer range across the bleak Arctic tundra, but in winter, they stay close to the conifer forests where they can find spongy lichen - known as reindeer moss - by digging through the deep snow. |
