Change in Status of Threatened Birds
BirdLife International announced change in status of following species:
European Roller (Coracias garrulous): uplist to Near Threatened?
posted in Surfbirds galleries
European Roller
Coracias garrulus
is currently listed as Least Concern. The status of the European population (53,000-110,000 pairs, occupying 50-74% of the global breeding range) was recently reassessed in Birds in Europe (BirdLife International 2004). Following a moderate decline during 1970-1990 (Tucker Heath 1994), the species continued to decline across Europe during 1990-2000, when up to 25% of birds were lost (including key populations in Turkey and European Russia). Overall declines exceeded 30% in three generations (15 years). Recent population trends in the rest of the species??€?? breeding range in central and southwest Asia are unknown, but even if these non-European populations are stable, the magnitude of the decline in Europe suggests that the species??€?? global status may need to be revised to at least Near Threatened. Any comments or new information ??† particularly on trends outside Europe, and including any data from the African wintering grounds ??† would be very welcome. |
