The Pyrrhuloxia (Cardinalis sinuatus) is a medium-sized North American bird in the same genus as the Northern Cardinal and the Vermilion Cardinal, which is a South American species.
It is primarily a resident of Mexico, but can be found in the southern parts of the U.S. states of Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas.
Its name comes from Greek terms describing its coloration (πυρρο?? = pyrrhos = reddish or orange) and the shape of its bill (λοξο?? = loxos = oblique, hence crossbill). It has been occasionally suggested that a more appropriate name would be "Desert Cardinal."
