Crown-of-thorns starfish (Acanthaster planci)

The crown-of-thorns starfish of the tropical Pacific Ocean feeds on coral, and is one of the most destructive of the 1,600 or so species of starfishes. During periods of high population growth, up to 15 adults may occupy a square metre, devastating large areas of coral reef.
