The lesser fish eagle (Ichthyophaga humilis) is a species of Ichthyophaga found in the Indian subcontinent, primarily in the foothills of the Himalayas, and south-east Asia. There are two subspecies: Ichthyophaga humilis humilis, which is native to the Malaysian Peninsula, Sumatra, Borneo, and Sulawesi; and Ichthyophaga humilis plumbea, which is native to Kashmir through southeast India, Nepal, and Burma towards Indochina. Order: Accipitriformes, Family: Accipitridae, Genus: Ichthyophaga, Species: Ichthyophaga humilis (Müller,S & Schlegel, 1841).

Taxonomy: Falco (Pandion) humilis S. Müller and Schlegel, 1841, Sumatra.
In the past was frequently listed as I. nana, but name humilis has priority. Two subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution
I. h. plumbea (Jerdon, 1871) – N India (Himachal) SE through Himalayas to Myanmar and Indochina (except SW); rare on Hainan.
I. h. humilis (S. Müller & Schlegel, 1841) – Malay Peninsula (from Tenasserim) and Sumatra through Borneo to Sulawesi, Sula Is and Buru (S Moluccas). |
