◈ 에일리언 입을 가진 물고기
영화 ‘에일리언’에서 주인공을 위협하는 에일리언의 입은 이중으로 돼 있다. 이런 입 구조를 가진 생물체가 현실에도 존재할까. 미국 데이비스캘리포니아주립대 리타 메하 교수팀은 곰치의 입 안에서 스프링처럼 튀어나오는 또 하나의 입을 발견했다. 연구팀은 곰치 5마리를 수조에 넣은 뒤 고속카메라로 1분에 100컷을 촬영해 곰치의 목구멍 쪽에 있는 이빨 주변에는 이빨 전체를 움직이게 하는 특이한 근육이 있다는 사실을 알아냈다. 이런 구조 덕분에 곰치는 다른 물고기보다 큰 먹잇감을 훨씬 더 잘 잡을 수 있다.

The leopard moray eel is widespread throughout the Indo-Pacific oceans from Réunion to the Hawaiian, Line and Society Islands, north to southern Japan, southern Korea, and south to New Caledonia. This eel is characterized by its narrow, curved jaws, vivid red stripes on the head, and elongated tubular nostrils.
