Pied stilts, Tauranga Harbour
Pied stilts, Tauranga Harbour
Outside the breeding season, pied stilts tend to
congregate in estuaries to feed. The New Zealand population was around 30,000 birds
in the mid-1990s. The same subspecies of pied stilt is also native to Australia and
the western Pacific, where it is more commonly called the black-winged stilt.
