The spiny icefish is a pale grey fish with dark crossbars, a spine on its snout and well-developed spines on its operculum. It reaches a maximum length of 43 cm and has an elongated, oval body shape. This species is known for its unique physiology, being one of the few vertebrates to lack hemoglobin, resulting in a white, translucent appearance.
