The hyacinth macaw of Brazil is the largest parrot in the world, measuring one metre in length. It is estimated that 2,500-10,000 hyacinth macaws now remain in their forest habitat, but each year their numbers are reduced as they are taken by local people for food and by trappers for the ever-increasing trade of exotic cage-birds. |
