King Island emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae minor)


Hand coloured lithograph (circa 1911) of (Dromaius parvulus) which is now a synonym of the Kangaroo Island Emu (Dromaius baudinianus) from The Birds of Australia (1910-28) by Gregory Macalister Mathews (1876-1949) - the specimen was later shown to come from King Island instead.

The King Island emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae minor) is an extinct subspecies of emu that was endemic to King Island, which is situated in the Bass Strait between mainland Australia and Tasmania. The small size of the King Island emu may be an example of insular dwarfism.
