This small red-purple parrot is found only on Pohnpei Island, its lagoon islets, and Ahnd Atoll. Once threatened by locals desiring the birds as pets, the Pohnpei lorikeet has made a massive comeback and is now so widespread that it is seen virtually everywhere, including right in the middle of town. The bird is easy to identify by its incessant screeching and awkward hyperactive flutter. It is often seen in pairs or groups of four to six individuals. |
