Herald moth (Scoliopteryx libatrix)

This widespread moth ranges from Canada and the USA, across Europe to Japan. The caterpillar feeds on willow, and the adult uses small barbs on its proboscis to pierce fruit. During the northern winter, the adults hibernate in caves.
