Kamchatka Gull, Kamchatka Gull
Kamchatka Gull, Kamchatka Gull
These pictures are chosen to illustrate the range of variation in 1st year birds. They are larger than Common Gulls and with larger bills. Their plumage is nearer to young Short-billed (Mew) Gulls. The tail-band is noticeably wider than Common Gull, and the dark smearing on the inner tail with heavy barring on the rump and upper-tail coverts is most unlike a Common Gull. The moult is less advanced than Common Gulls.
Note the 1st bird seems to have 1 2nd generation tail feather, probably caused by accidental loss. Unlike Common Gull, second year birds have a very pretty dotted tail-band.
