The Crimson Finch Neochmia phaeton is a common species of estrildid finch found in Australia, Indonesia & Papua New Guinea. It has an estimated global extent of occurrence of 100,000- 1,000,000 km².
It is commonly found in moist savanna, and subtropical/ tropical (lowland) moist shrubland. The status of the species is evaluated as Least Concern.

Taxonomy: Fringilla phaeton Hombron and Jacquinot, 1841, Raffles Bay, Northern Territory, Australia.
Proposed race albiventer (described from Claudie R, in NE Queensland) treated as a synonym of evangelinae. Two subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution
N. p. evangelinae D'Albertis & Salvadori, 1879 – S New Guinea (Trans-Fly region) and extreme NE Australia (S to C Cape York Peninsula).
N. p. phaeton (Hombron & Jacquinot, 1841) – N Western Australia (Kimberley Division), N Northern Territory and NW, NE & E Queensland. |
