dophin : Gr. delphis(δελφις, dophin을 의미하며 자궁을 뜻하는 delphys(δελφυς란 말로부터 유래했다고 합니다.)
porpoise : L. porcus(pig) + piscis(fish)
우리말로는 dophin을 참돌고래, porpoise를 쇠돌고래로 구분해서 부릅니다. 두 고래 모두 흔히 돌고래라 부르지만, dolphin은 Delphinidae와 Platanistoidea(강 돌고래상과)를 포함하며, porpoise는 Phocoenidae에 속합니다.
