Red-eyed Viroe, Chivi Vireo in Suriname
Red-eyed vireo, Chivi Vireo
Photo of a red-eyed vireo made by Hans Gebuis in the
Netherlands in October 1996. The bird is common in the forests of
the interior of Suriname, often high up in the canopy of trees
and singing. In Holland it is very rare, a vagrant from
North-America, so this is a special photo. The young birds from
North-America (like this one seems to be) don't have the very red
eyes the adults have there. In Suriname the adults that breed
there, have brown eyes. So their name doesn't seem to be very
appropriate there and they are often called Chivi vireo and are a
different (sub)species from their North-American family members.
