Ducks feeding
Captured from a WONDERFUL MULTIMEDIA CD-ROM title,
"Eyewitness Encyclopedia of Nature",
Dorling Kindersley Multimedia, 1995
FEEDING
DIFFERENT DUCKS feed in different ways. This enables several species to coexist without competing for food. Dabbling ducks collect food near the surface, while dipping ducks reach deeper food by "upending". Diving ducks catch their food by swimming underwater.
DIPPING
A dipping duck "upends" to reach food in shallow water.
DABBLING
A dabbling duck filters the water with its beak and tongue.
DIVING
A diving duck may keep its wings open or closed.
