(European) Spur-thighed Tortoise (Testudo graeca)

Captured from a WONDERFUL MULTIMEDIA CD-ROM title,
"Eyewitness Encyclopedia of Nature",
Dorling Kindersley Multimedia, 1995

TURTLES AND TORTOISES
TURTLES live mainly in water, and tortoises live on land. These animals are protected by a bony shell, which is covered with large, tough scales. Turtles and tortoises do not have teeth. Instead, their jaws have hardened edges like a bird's beak. Turtles eat plants and animals, but tortoises feed only on plants. Both animals reproduce by laying eggs on land.

EUROPEAN TORTOISE
When threatened, a tortoise pulls its limbs and head inside its shell.
