The white-headed duck (Oxyura leucocephala) is a small stiff-tailed duck some 45 cm long. The male has a white head with black crown, a blue bill, and reddish-grey plumage. The female has a dark bill and rather duller colouring. Its breeding habitat is lakes with open water and dense vegetation at the margin. It dives under water and feeds on aquatic vegetation as well as some animal matter. It is more likely to swim away from a perceived threat than to fly. This duck is known from Spain, North Africa, western and central Asia. Populations are declining, mostly due to loss of habitat and hunting, and the International Union for Conservation of Nature has rated the bird's status as "endangered".

White-headed Duck (Oxyura leucocephala)
French: Érismature à tête blanche German: Weißkopf-Ruderente Spanish: Malvasía cabeciblanca
Taxonomy: Anas leucocephala Scopoli, 1769, no locality, but probably northern Italy.
Relationships among Oxyura species uncertain; present species considered by some to be closely related to O. jamaicensis, but probably more closely linked to O. maccoa. In Spain, hybridization in the wild with O. jamaicensis (spread from introduced English population) has produced fertile progeny (viable offspring in back-crosses with both parental species); genetic diversity in expanding European population of jamaicensis found to exceed that of native Spanish leucocephala population, and, unless effective control of jamaicensis continues, genetic introgression will severely compromise the survival of O. leucocephala as a genetically and evolutionarily distinct species. Monotypic.
