The Pavonine Quetzal is distributed in the western and central parts of the Amazon Basin.
It is found in the mid-storey, sub-canopy and canopy of terra firme forest.
It is a spectacular trogon and the male shows its metallic emerald green head, upperparts and upper breast contrasting with scarlet lower breast and belly with a black undertail. The bill is orange-red becoming yellow on the tip. The female is duller with some black on the bill, brown on the head and breast and some white on the brown undertail.
