Technically, before they slip the jesses on his leg, he is "wild". After
that, he's a captive. He's part of the free-flight program at the Desert
Museum, and, as you can see, he has no restraints or monitoring devices on
him. He could take off any time he wishes, but he doesn't "wish", at least
for now. The entice him to come accept the jesses with a treat of quail
leg. Um, yummy! Or, mouse guts. I have a picture here of him eating the
mouse parts and an unacceptably "soft" one of him flying. All hand held,
and I never hand-hold. :-)

Barn Owl (Tyto alba) or, to distinguish it from relatives, Common Barn Owl, is an owl in the barn owl family Tytonidae. This is one of the two groups of owls, the other being the typical owls Strigidae. (Any member of the family Tytonidae is sometimes referred to as a Barn Owl.) |
