The blue mountain swallowtail (Papilio ulysses) is also known as the Ulysses butterfly and the blue mountain butterfly. It is found along the northeastern coast of Queensland, Australia, and is considered the emblem of Queensland tourism. It is also found in some islands and countries off the northeastern coast of Australia. Males and females have vividly coloured electric blue and black uppersides of their wings, and the females have additional blue crescents on the undersides of their wings which appear as flashes of blue in the rainforest. Males, in their search for females, are attracted to the colour blue. They prefer to feed almost exclusively on the pink-flowered doughwood (Euodia), and live in tropical rainforests and some garden environments. |
