Alpine chough (Pyrrhocorax graculus)

The alpine chough seldom strays far from mountains, and is widespread in the heights of the Alps. Though it moves down the slopes in winter, it rarely descends below 1,500m. In summer, the bird dwells well above the treeline, often walking across high-altitude meadows to look for insects and spiders. It also lingers near tourist huts and mountain restaurants, ready to seize scraps of food.
