Korean-Far Eastern Sea Cucumber J01-Stichopus japonicus

Order: Aspidochirotida
Family: Stichopodidae
Common name: Far Eastern (or Japanese) Sea Cucumber
Scientific name: Stichopus japonicus (Selenka)
Korean Name: 참해삼, 돌기해삼

Habitat: The coasts of Korea, Japan, Honkong, Taiwan, Russia etc.

The upper part and the lower part are distinguished clearly because one side
of the body is always attached to the bottom. They can crawl like worms by
retracting their muscles. And they can dig a cave with tenacles. They walk
slowly by using the suckers on the tube feet. Their tube feet have been
changed from the tenacles around the mouth. They eat microbes strained from
the mud or sand in the mouth.

Scanned from an old book for children, "Kemongsa Science In Picture"
Volume 21, published by Kemongsa, 1993.
